Katie's Biography

Katie Holmes was born on December 18, 1978 in Toledo, Ohio. Toledo, she explains, is a very small town, which explains her upbringing. "I come from a small city, and I was very, very sheltered." Katie, who is the youngest child of five admits that family is a very important part of her life. Katie very much idolized her older brother and her three sisters. She attempted many of the sports her silblings did as kids, but she claims to be horrible at sports. "When I was little, I attempted to play basketball and softball, attempted being the key word here. The truth is, I was horrible at sports!" But although her athletic ability failed, it opened up alternate extracurricular activities. She ended up trying out for school plays and musicals. She also joined jazz and ballet to add to her dancing credits. Last, but not least, she took piano lessons for seven years, although she confesses to not being very good at it. That lead to a few classes at a local modeling school but she hadn't really had much professional training.

Her junior year in high school changed all of that. She decide to attend an international modeling and talent convention in New York City, where she met her manager. That led to Katie's first movie, The Ice Storm. Back at home, Katie continued her schooling at an all girls Catholic school, and she graduated with a 3.8. She even skipped the Ice Storm premire to finish her final exams. She was even accepted to Columbia University, where she has defered her enrolement. That kind of dedication is a trademark of Katie Holmes, and what led her to Dawson's Creek.

During her senior year, Katie took the part of Lola in her school's production of Damn Yankees. Katie didn't want to miss auditions for the Dawson's Creek auditions, so she sent in her tape to Kevin Williamson instead of flying to Los Angeles. Little known fact is, she played a scene for the video with her mom playing the role of Dawson! Her acting ability and her charisma in playing the role of Joey was evident to Kevin Williamson who immediately loved her. He called her up and asked her to come down for another meeting, but she refused! It interfered with the run of Damn Yankees. This set of priorities just made Kevin Williamson want her even more, and he rescheduled for her.
